Healthcare needs of Broken Hill a priority for local community group

14 Nov 2023

A Broken Hill community group has thrown its support behind the newly established Mildura Health Foundation, saying anything that assists with the health needs of the Silver City is worthwhile.

The Y’s Men’s Club of Broken Hill recently donated $1000 to assist with Mildura Health Foundation’s Patient Accommodation Project.

The donation will help ensure those from Broken Hill and the wider regions who are undergoing radiation treatment at the Mildura Health Icon Cancer Centre, have a place to stay at a low or no cost after State-Government rebates.

The $5 million build will include 10 patient accommodation apartments with all the creature comforts of home. The facility will be located on land already purchased in Mildura’s Thirteenth Street health precinct.

Club President Geoff Webb said any project that improves healthcare for the Broken Hill community is one worth contributing to.

“We are aware of the health needs of Broken Hill and are happy to do anything that assists and supports with that,” Mr Webb said.

“The Y’s Men’s Club of Broken Hill makes donations to accommodation houses in other areas including Cancer Council Greenhill Lodge Accommodation, Flinders Medical Centre Accommodation and Ronald McDonald House.

“The club has a dozen members and as a club we support a range of initiatives.”

The local club was established more than 50 years ago and has a proud history of service to the Broken Hill community which includes operating a historic merry-go-round at community events, conducting a weekly raffle at the Silver City Workingmen's Club and offering scholarships to young locals to assist with their tertiary education.
